My links
These are some of my favorite resources on the Web.
Computers
- Digital Blasphemy - http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/
- A collection of desktop wallpaper created by a computer graphics artist. Many of the wallpaper depict natural landscapes. Although full access to the collection requires a membership fee, I have benefited from the small number of free wallpaper.
- Logos Bible Software - http://www.logos.com/
- Logos uses the elegant Libronix Digital Library System to offer a vast array of Christian e-books, from Bible translations and commentaries to theology texts. Libronix is free to download; you pay only for the e-books. Unfortunately, few Catholic books are available. You can, however, find both the New American Bible and the RSV Catholic Edition. I recommend the affordable Essential IVP Reference Collection. Academic pricing is available for students.
- pair Networks - http://www.pair.com/
- I have hosted Web sites at pair Networks for several years now. Prior to using pair, I tried a few other hosting companies. pair Networks far excels these other companies. The few times I have contacted technical support by phone or e-mail, I received prompt and satisfactory answers. The support staff has often solved problems I created, like removing scripts with hacking vulnerabilities and restoring deleted files. Although pair has many excellent features, one of the finest is the truly useful and user-friendly Account Control Center. I currently own an Advanced account at $17.95 a month. The very best feature is that I am able to share this account's considerable resources with other Web sites at an additional charge of only $1 a month per domain name. If you are considering using pair Networks, I recommend that you sign up for their monthly newsletter.
- pairNIC - http://www.pairnic.com/
- I began using pairNIC because it is owned by pair Networks, my Web hosting company. Although it is not the cheapest domain name registrar, its customer service, domain name features, and online account management are all excellent.
Money
- Bankaholic - http://www.bankaholic.com/
- This neat Web site alerts users to the best online banking deals.
- Bankrate.com - http://www.bankrate.com/
- I use it to research interest rates for savings accounts and CDs, but the site offers much more. Their slogan seems accurate: Comprehensive. Objective. Free.
- Investopedia - http://www.investopedia.com/
- A helpful site for amateur investors, it provides short definitions and detailed articles on a comprehensive range of investing topics.
News
- The Drudge Report - http://www.drudgereport.com/
- A convenient one-page summary of the day's headlines. Although most headlines link to articles on other news Web sites, Matt Drudge frequently posts exclusive reports.
- Spirit Daily - http://www.spiritdaily.com/
- A sort of Catholic version of The Drudge Report.
Reference
- Bible: Revised Standard Version - http://www.hti.umich.edu/r/rsv/
- The Humanities Text Initiative of the University of Michigan has the complete text of the Revised Standard Version on its Web site. Besides browsing the Bible translation, you can also search by keywords and chapter and verse.
- Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
- I use Wikipedia for most of my Internet research. In fact, Google usually returns a Wikipedia article in the first three or four search results. Besides the breadth of up-to-date articles, two features make Wikipedia a good resource. First, all terms in an article with articles of their own work as links, enabling fast cross-reference. Second, besides text, Wikipedia articles also include helpful graphics, including photos and charts.
